Retainer Instructions – Prosper, TX
What to Do After Getting Your Retainer
- Until you’re told otherwise, make sure your retainer is always in your mouth except during meals and your oral hygiene routine.
- When you take your retainer out to eat, put it in its storage case. Do not wrap it in a napkin; many people who do this end up throwing their retainers away by accident.
- Clean your retainer on a daily basis with a soft-bristled toothbrush and warm water. (Hot water might warp the material.) You can also use a specialized orthodontic appliance cleaner, but even if you do, you will still need to brush the retainer regularly.
- Never put your retainer in your pocket by itself. It should always be in its case when you’re not wearing it.
- `If you have a pet, always make sure that your retainer is in a place where they can’t get to it.
- To speed up the process of getting used to talking with your retainer, read to yourself out loud, and spend some time speaking or singing in front of a mirror.
- Be gentle when handling your retainer. Call us immediately if it becomes damaged or if you lose it.
- Do not attempt to fix or adjust your retainer by yourself; get in touch with our office if you think something might be wrong with it.
- When you visit our office, remember to bring your retainer with you.
- Be diligent about caring for your retainer in order to help it last as long as possible.
- When going swimming, take your retainer out before you get in the water.
- Make sure your retainer doesn’t come in direct contact with anything hot (as in hot water, a hot dashboard in your car, or your washing machine/dryer).
