Clear and Metal Braces

In most cases, braces remain the top solution for helping teenagers overcome crooked teeth and misaligned bites. We offer traditional metal braces, but clear braces are also available for patients who are concerned about appearances. When you come to our office for a consultation, we can explain how braces work in more detail and why they are often an excellent solution for a wide variety of orthodontic issues.

Invisalign

When given the choice, many teenagers favor Invisalign as an orthodontic option. The treatment involves a series of clear trays that can easily be taken out of the mouth, making them a more convenient and aesthetically pleasing option. We will need to examine the teeth and jaws carefully before determining whether Invisalign is truly a viable choice.

FAQs About Braces for Teens

Whether you’re a teenager or the parent of one, there are probably a few things you want to know before beginning the orthodontic process. We aim to make sure that our patients and their families are as well-informed as possible when it comes to braces for teenagers. Below, we have answered a number of questions about braces that we have often received. Please reach out to us if there’s anything you want to ask that isn’t addressed here.

How Long Do Braces Need to Be Worn?

There’s not just one answer to this question. The exact amount of time that braces need to be worn varies from patient to patient depending on factors such as oral health and the nature of the misalignment issues that need to be corrected. For example, mild orthodontic problems that can be corrected with Invisalign might only require about 6 to 18 months of treatment. Meanwhile, more severe issues may call for two or more years of wearing traditional braces. We can give you a better idea of what your own treatment timeline will look like during your initial consultation.

Can You Expect Braces to Hurt?

Naturally, younger patients tend to be worried about any pain they might experience as part of their orthodontic treatment. Since braces and Invisalign work by exerting pressure on the teeth, it is normal to experience a slight amount of discomfort at first. That said, it generally doesn’t take long to become accustomed to the presence of braces or a clear aligner inside your mouth. Note that many patients do find Invisalign to be more comfortable than traditional braces because it uses smooth plastic in place of metal brackets and wires.

Can Getting Braces Cause You to Miss School?

Generally speaking, braces shouldn’t keep you out of school; patients are typically able to go straight to class after completing a treatment at our office. We will need to schedule a number of follow-up appointments to make sure the treatment stays on track, but these visits shouldn’t take too much time. We aim to bring our teenage patients straighter smiles they can be proud of without interfering with their ability to get a good education.

Can People with Braces Play Sports?

Braces won’t keep you off the field or court, but you should always make sure that you’re wearing a mouthguard to keep your brackets and wires (as well as the rest of your smile) safe. In addition to offering protection against any blows to the face, mouthguards can also eliminate the risk of your braces accidentally injuring the soft tissues in your mouth. With the right precautions, there’s no reason why braces should stop you from embracing your inner athlete.

What Happens Once the Orthodontic Treatment Is Complete?

After your teeth have reached their desired positions, you will no longer have to wear braces or clear aligners. However, your treatment won’t quite be complete at this point. The next step is to wear a retainer to ensure that your teeth stay where they’re supposed to be. Our team will give you instructions for when you need to wear your retainer. Many patients have to keep their retainers in their mouths daily before eventually transitioning to only putting them in at night.

We hope you found the above FAQs helpful and informative, and we encourage you to call us if there’s anything else you want to know.
